PROGRAMME
The course deals with, in a phenomenological and experimental way, the electromagnetic properties of matter and the interaction of radiation with matter.
1. Synchrotron radiation properties.
2. Electromagnetic properties of matter.
3. Dielectric and optical properties of solids. Polarizability.
4. Piezoelectricity. Ferroelectricity. Ferromagnetism. Paramagnetism.
5. Diamagnetism. Antiferromagnetism. Ferrimagnetism.
6. Interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter.
7. Maxwell equations in presence of matter. Wave propagation in matter.
Waves in dielectrics, conductors and metals. Reflection from metals, dielectrics
and perfect insulators. Total reflection.
8. Some applications of synchrotron radiation.
9. Absorption spectroscopy. Photoelectron spectroscopy. Diffraction.
